Reading placed at the heart of London primary school with creation of new cosy corner

The idea for the reading corner at Drew Primary School came about when the school were deciding on the best way to utilise empty space.

Staff at Drew Primary School, which is a part of the Learning in Harmony Trust (LiHT), in Newham, in London, has placed reading at the heart of their school, with the creation of a new cosy corner for the pupils.

The idea for the reading corner came about when the school were deciding on the best way to utilise empty space. They decided that there would be no better way than to fill it with literature, love, and adventure.

Staff at the school also asked the pupils what they would like to do with the space, and with reading being a popular activity for the children, there was overwhelming support for the creation of a calm and comfortable area dedicated to sitting and reading.

Since the reading corner first opened, the pupils have been independently using the area throughout the day, during their lunchtimes and break times. The children have taken pride in sharing the love they have found for reading.

The reading corner has been a great place for children to dive into their favourite stories and share their favourite books with their peers. The children have enjoyed immersing themselves in a range of exciting new literary adventures.

In addition to the joy that the corner has brought to the pupils, it has also helped to develop the children’s independence and sense of responsibility for keeping it tidy and the noise levels low.

A Year 5 pupil at Drew Primary School, said: “I like when my teacher reads us all a book together. We all read the same book to be part of the same adventure.”

A Year 4 pupil at Drew Primary School, said: “I enjoy the new reading corner. Sitting on beanbags helps me relax and then I can lose myself in a book.”

A Year 6 pupil at Drew Primary School, said: “The reading corner is a great place for me to read my favourite books, such as David Walliams' books that I find so funny. I end up laughing out loud.”

Theresa Goodrich, Headteacher at Drew Primary School, said: “The reading corner has been an absolutely fantastic project and it has been so wonderful to see how enthusiastic our pupils have been throughout its development.

“At Drew Primary School, we put the happiness and success of our pupils at the heart of every decision we make and so we wanted them to be inspired in every part of our school. The additional space for our pupils to immerse themselves in the adventure of reading has been another great way to help ensure each child is able to thrive.”
