Vision Impairment Service Overview:
Our Specialist Education Services for the Vision Impaired provides advice and support for children and young people aged 0-19 with a vision impairment, their parents/carers, settings and schools. The Service team consists of Qualified Teachers of the Vision Impaired, a Habilitation Specialist, giving advice on getting around safely and how to make environments accessible, and an IT Specialist, to advise on how technology can help and to offer training. • Appropriate support following assessment and monitoring of progress, including advice on how to access the curriculum and exams
• Supporting parents with pre-school children at home, which could include advice on creating a sensory environment at home and which toys are suitable for younger children
• Advice to educational settings, which could include using large print books and Braille materials

• Orientation and mobility training, encouraging children and young people to independently and safely move and explore their environments, engaging in road safety training, long cane training and public transportation use
• Environmental audits of educational settings to make recommendations on adaptations needed to the physical environment
• Training and workshops to raise awareness about vision impairment and how best to support children and young people with a vision impairment on our caseload.

Orientation and Mobility Training
Orientation and mobility training teaches children and young people how to travel safely in familiar and unfamiliar environments. Training will increase the child’s confidence and prepare them for future independent travel.
Orientation and mobility skills should begin to be developed ininfancy, starting with basic body awareness and movement and into adulthood, using skills that allow a person to navigate their world efficiently, independently and safely.
What skills are taught?
- Sensory awareness: gaining information about the world through hearing, smell and touch.
- Independent movement: which includes crawling, rolling, walking etc.
- Sighted guide: using another person to aid in travel
- Self-protective techniques: using the natural extension of arm and hands which provide added protection in unfamiliar areas
- Mobility devices: such as use of various canes, cane skills, and cane techniques
- Route training: such as the safest route to the local shops, travel from home to school
- Orientation in a new school
- Public transport travel
- Safety and level of independence are the key issues inorientation and mobility training.
- The Habilitation Specialist also undertakes environmental audits in educational settings.

IT Service
- Flourish Specialist Education Services specialises in I.T. assessments for vision impaired students
- The assessments usually take place at the student’s school.
- Students are assessed to help identify their access to both the school network user account and their access to the interactive whiteboards using various I.T. equipment and software.
- A professional I.T. report is then produced and sent to the school.
- The report will advise on the recommendations and any necessary changes required to be made in order to make I.T. more accessible to the students.
- Training is available thereafter if required.
- We will also work with the school’s I.T. department to create an adapted bespoke school network user account and establish a link from the interactive white board directly to the student’s screen.
- We can also set up the recommended hardware and software as well as providing the necessary training for the pupils and staff, creating specific and specialised user manuals for the training sessions.
